Save money with these watering tips

Plants absorb water through the roots. Deep infrequent watering creates deep roots. Shallow frequent watering creates short roots. As water evaporates from the surface of the soil, short rooted plants and lawns will need water more often.

Did you know that 50-60% of your irrigation can be lost to evaporation? Whenever possible, water between midnight and 8:00 a.m. to avoid evaporation.

Ways to conserve water and save money:

  • Monitor your sprinkler controller’s program.  Change the schedule to adjust for changes in weather.
  • Update your sprinkler controller to a smart one with wi-fi connectivity. Your schedule will adjust with the weather, therefore you will save money on your water bill.
  • Don’t water in the rain, install a rain sensor on your irrigation system to prevent water waste.
  • Maintain your system.  Having your system checked regularly by an irrigation professional will help increase efficiency of water delivery and extend the life of your system.
  • If you have self-watering planters, flowerpots, vegetable or flower gardens, or new plantings you may be spending a considerable amount of time keeping them watered (probably by hand) during our hot summers. Consider installing drip irrigation which is very efficient and uses up to 60% less water. This method keeps plants healthy by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants.
